Jocelyn loves her nanny more than her own mother – until the night that the nanny disappears. Jo is seven years old when it happens and never gets over the loss.
Now, thirty years later, Jo is returning to her family home with her daughter in tow – just as human remains are pulled out of the house’s lake.
Then there’s a knock on the door. And a woman claiming to be her nanny stands outside.
Is she who she says she is?
Can she be trusted?
And what really happened on that fateful night all those years ago?
Sometimes the truth hurts so much you’d rather hear the lie.
My Review ***** 5stars My first book by this author and it definitely won’t be my last. It is magnificent. I have seen it flying all over social media and heard lots of great things, they weren’t wrong. It is pure thriller gold. Jo is returning to Lake Hall after the death of her husband Chris, not a thought that she relishes. With her young daughter Ruby, the move is only going to be temporary the idea of living with her Mother again is agonising. Their relationship has always been a sour one and she can’t think of a worse place to end up but needs must. A grisly discovery opens up old wounds and leaves Jo questioning why nanny Hannah really left that night and is her mother as terrible as she has always thought her to be. A captivating, tense, chilling and fully engaging read. The antagonist is brilliantly written, everything you want in a baddy. Your worst nightmare in fact. Cruel, devious and a master manipulator. A superb location and quite a deceptive one, I mean murder at a glorious manor house owned by a distinguished Lady absolutely not. I would say that as you read it none of the characters are particularly likeable but that is the whole point until you get to the end and you see why. A really enjoyable read.
